Everyone Has a Hungry Heart

We are creatures of desire. We all have wants. Some people think that the Bible condemns all desires as evil. Not so. Our problem is not that we have desires. Our problem is that we desires things that can never fully satisfy us as if they could. I still remember the nights, many years ago, when I lay awake after partying all evening and thinking, "Is this all there is to life?"

What if we are wired to desire something more than what the stuff of this life has to offer? C.S. Lewis once wrote,

Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing (Mere Christianity).

Have you ever considered that the writer of Psalm 73 had it right when he said about God, "Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
